________________________________________THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. – John 1:1-5 (NASB)
________________________________________
John’s writing approach is very different from Matthew, Mark and Luke (synoptic gospels-covering the same miracles, parables and events in Jesus’ life) because his gospel emphasizes Jesus’ divinity and identity.
In chapter one, we are given a revelation of the divinity of Jesus Christ from the start. Jesus is called the Word describing that the Word was with God at the start of creation. The Word and Jesus are interchangeable. In Genesis 1, everything was created by God uttering the phrase “Let there be…” and so it did. He just said the word and it was done. In the second verse, we get the revelation that Jesus was with God. Interesting that John revealed that Word was Jesus and God used words to create everything. Verse 3 states that Jesus was the reason why everything came into being and that apart from Christ, nothing becomes anything. Verse 4 reiterates the preceding verse because only in Christ will we have life because he is the light of men. Verse 5 visualizes the light that Jesus brings to this dark world but men do not want to stay in it.
Observe the way John wrote the opening verses of this first chapter. There is not much fanfare and historical background description as the three other gospels were written. John goes straight to how Jesus was already there even before God created everything. He brings us all to the purpose of our creation. Paul says the same thing in Romans 12:36 – For “from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” It reveals to us the divinity of Jesus. He is supreme over all beings and things and He was the reason for God’s creation. Shouldn’t Jesus be essence of our existence? Could we continue to live without intentionality of bringing Him glory after knowing that everything was created for Him?

REFLECTION
• Why do you think Jesus was called Word? Why did God use the Word to create?
• Have you intentionally lived your Christian life to bring Jesus glory?

SEND YOUR LIGHT AND YOUR TRUTH Poem Devotional

January 7
________________________________________
SEND YOUR LIGHT AND YOUR TRUTH
Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people,
from the deceitful and unjust man deliver me!
2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you rejected me?
Why do I go about mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!
4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. – Psalm 43:1-5

In this psalm, we discover how the psalmist run to the Lord for protection. How often do we do that today in our world? We have isolated ourselves from God and think that we can live our lives the way we want them without a consequence. The humility and faith of the psalmist is refreshing to hear as he humbly asks God to be taken under his wings. Hope in God is not always evident in many Christians’ lives. We allow the world to corrupt our dependency on God. We don’t always remember to let the truth set us free and end up being comfortable living in bondage to lies.
________________________________________
ADORATION: You are the God who knows what is best for us. You are protector of all those who love you. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ for the powerful shield you provide.
CONFESSION: Forgive me Lord each time I forget that I need to run to you for truth and light and for protection. Let me never to assume that I can do anything without you.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you for all that you do for sinners like me. Even though we don’t deserve it, you always faithfully deliver all your promises to us.
SUPPLICATION: Help us to never entertain thoughts of doing things on our own strength. When I automatically do things independently, please remind me to seek your wisdom.

REFLECTION
• Why is seeking God for truth and light important to walk in the Spirit?
• Why do we need to worship God in spirit and in truth?
• Are you a true worshiper? How do you worship God in Spirit and in truth?
WHO SHALL DWELL ON YOUR HOLY HILL? Poem Devotional

January 6
________________________________________
WHO SHALL DWELL ON YOUR HOLY HILL?
O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right
and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
but who honors those who fear the LORD;
who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 who does not put out his money at interest
and does not take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved. – Psalm 15:1-5
________________________________________
In this psalm, tent and holy hill refers to God’s sanctuary. In other words, the psalmist talks about who are allowed to be in this holy place. Blameless living instead of a life of wickedness is the pre-requisite for that dwelling place of God. He enumerates them as those who do what is right, speaks truth, rends their tongue and does no evil.
________________________________________
ADORATION: You are worthy of praise for you are the only one who deserves to be lifted up high on a hill. You are majestic in your lovingkindness.
CONFESSION: Forgive me Lord, when I forget to keep holy and follow your ways. Give me a repentant and humble heart always.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you that you always provide many second chances to walk back to your path.
SUPPLICATION: I pray for all believers who are constantly bombarded with a battle with their own flesh and the attacks of the enemy to stay pure.

REFLECTION
• Why is it important to keep yourself pure for the Lord?
• Do you think you will be allowed to dwell in the Holy Hill by how you live your life?
OUR EYES LOOK TO THE LORD Poem Devotional

January 5
________________________________________
OUR EYES LOOK TO THE LORD
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us.
3 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
4 Our soul has had more than enough
of the scorn of those who are at ease,
of the contempt of the proud. – Psalm 123
________________________________________
The ESV student study bible notes on Psalm 123 says that this is a community lament. The faithful pilgrims feel themselves to be the objects of scorn and contempt. The psalm goes beyond simply asking for a safe journey. It seeks relief from the scorn. We, believers need to constantly fix our eyes on Jesus so that nothing in this world, not even contempt or scorn will derail us from the narrow path to him who is the way, the truth and the life.
________________________________________
ADORATION: You are the source of all wisdom and power. I praise and laud you my Almighty Lord and Savior. I love you with as much love I can give. I worship you with all my heart, mind, soul and body.
CONFESSION: Forgive me whenever I succumb to pitying or defending myself from being belittled, insulted or rejected and judged. Let me allow you to fight my battles. Let me remember to be like a child, always holding your hands and letting me be led by you.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you for all that you have given me. Do not let any of these gifts be a distraction in my close walk with you. Help me remember the Giver rather than the gift.
SUPPLICATION: Bless me with all the diligence and persistence I need so that I can focus on you, especially in times of trouble. Let me rejoice in times of peace and exult you always.

REFLECTION
• What do you think God feels when we run to him when we are being ridiculed, rejected or abused?
• Why is the act of running to God for help important for Christians?
COME, BLESS THE LORD Poem Devotional

January 4
________________________________________
COME, BLESS THE LORD
Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD,
who stand by night in the house of the LORD!
2 Lift up your hands to the holy place
and bless the LORD!
3 May the LORD bless you from Zion,
he who made heaven and earth! – Psalm 134
________________________________________
The Hebrew word “barak” means “to kneel”. However, when written in the piel form it means to “show respect” (usually translated as “bless”). In this psalm, the servants of the Lord especially those who were in night duty at the house of the Lord brings praise to the Lord. To bless the Lord means to praise or give glory to the Lord. We recognize how the psalmist invites us to bless the Lord with our hands lifted to his Holy Place.
________________________________________
ADORATION: Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise you creator of all things. You created all things bright and beautiful. I will exalt you every minute and every second of my life.
CONFESSION: Forgive me Lord each time I don’t lift you up in praise and adoration. Because of selfishness and busy-ness, I forget to focus on you. Instead, I get concerned with my selfish desires and follow the call of the flesh.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you that you have made all creation for Jesus and through Him and with Him. I am forever grateful for the love you showed me when you gave your only Son Jesus, to die for my sins just so I can be free.
SUPPLICATION: I pray for all sinners like me, to learn humility from Jesus. Despite being God, he chose to be human and give up his life for all of us. Help me to decrease and let You increase. Give me courage to say “no” to self-satisfaction, self-preservation, self-protection, approval addiction and self-worship and pride.
________________________________________
REFLECTION
• Why is it important for Christians to constantly bless the Lord?
• What happens when we forget to worship God on a regular basis?
• Why is vertical focus on the cross instead of the horizontal focus on life situations more beneficial for believers?
• What benefits do we reap when we bless others and praise God?
THE EXCELLENCY OF BROTHERLY UNITY Poem Devotional

January 3
________________________________________
THE EXCELLENCY OF BROTHERLY UNITY
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the LORD commanded the blessing—life forever. – Psalm 133
________________________________________
David stresses in this psalm the excellency of brotherly unity. Many churches have fallen because of the lack of brotherly unity. Unity is borne out of love. Division comes from selfishness. When there is division in a person’s heart or in a relationship or church, there is a lack of surrender to love. In this psalm, David illustrates what results from oneness in spirit. It allows us to display the pursuit of peace and genuine love for God and his people.
________________________________________
ADORATION: Praise be to you God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. You are three in one God, all united to bring glory to the Almighty. Since the beginning of time, you have operated in harmony with each other.
CONFESSION: Forgive me whenever I separate myself from you by independent thinking and following the dictates of my selfish nature. Forgive me whenever I do not submit to someone who has authority over me when I know they are believing lies.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you for the gift of brotherly love. Without it, there will be more chaos in this already corrupted world.
SUPPLICATION: I pray for all those who are at war with themselves, with others and with authorities. Remind them of the example of humility you showed the world when you came and lived amongst humans. Warn us each time we succumb to conflict or proving we are right and others are wrong.

REFLECTION
• Why do you think we are called for unity in the church?
• What happens when division and selfish ambition corrupts the body of Christ?
FUTURE GLORY Poem Devotional

FUTURE GLORY
A poem by ILMA
What we suffer now is incomparable to the glory He’ll reveal to us
For all creation is eagerly waiting to know who his children really are
Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse
But with eager hope, creation looks forward when we join him.
We believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit
We long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering
We eagerly hope when God will give us our full rights as adopted children
We were given this hope when we were saved and believed in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses and tells us what to pray for
He shows us to pray with groanings that cannot be expressed in words
And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is say
For the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s ways.
God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him
God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like Christ
And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself
And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

MEMORY VERSE
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. – Romans 8:28
Read: Romans 8:18-30
When we become Christians, we have hope that the promise of God for a future glory is going to happen. Unlike unbelievers, we can see that God causes everything, even the bad things to work for God’s glory. How loving our heavenly Father is, he gave us his son so that we can have right standing with him where Jesus is the oldest and all believers have the same right as him.

• What should we remember when we encounter hardships and trials in life?
PRAY LONG Poem Devotional
October 11________________________________________
One day soon afterward, Jesus went up on a mountain to pray and he prayed to God all night. – Luke 6:12(NLT)
PRAY LONG
A poem and essay by ILMA
When we find time to pray to the Lord
We are manifesting our praise and giving Him laud
When we hunger to be intimate with Jesus Christ
We are going to long to be with him and stay in his light.
When we love someone, we don’t count the time
We want to be with that person always
When we pray long, we show that we hunger for him
Don’t put a limit to someone who can free us from sin.
________________________________________
It was once during my divorce that I prayed all night long. I felt led to pray until my pain was gone. Divorce was one of the worst thing anyone could ever experience It is like you yourself died. The dream to be loved and cherish, the loss of being with the person you vowed to be with forever, the brokenness and betrayal of someone who wants out from the commitment. The Holy Spirit pulled me out of the abyss of pain. He nudged me to pray all night long so I can be comforted and get closer to him. Christ championed praying incessantly. He is inviting us not to put limits to praying because that is how we can be intimate with him and grow.

PRAYER
Lord, let me never put limits on time when I pray to you.
REFLECTION
Why is it hard for many of us to pray all night or all day long?

ON RESPECTING ALL Poem Devotional
February 1

Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.
-1 Peter 2:17(NLT)
ON RESPECTING ALL
A poem and essay by ILMA
We were all created out of love by the Lord up above
How come we don’t always follow the path to love?
Revere the Lord by respecting and obeying his commands
He will shower you with blessings; Go now and seek his Son.
The Lord God expects you to respect all people
We were all made the same, so let’s treat everyone as equal
Respect all believers and the ones he puts in authority
You will find favor and be blessed and you’ll have victory.
________________________________________
The dictionary defines “respect” as a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. This is a worldly notion because in God’s economy, we are all expected to respect all people. They do not have to prove their worth in terms of abilities, qualities or achievements. Just because they are humans like us, we need to revere them as we respect the Lord. In Genesis, we know that we are all made in his image and likeness. So, if we are all designed with his own imprint in us, aren’t we all entitled to be respected? I cringe and my heart cries out when I see someone disrespects somebody, especially if they are those who have been discriminated and marginalized.

PRAYER
Lord, teach me to respect all people as I would revere you.

SUPPLIER OF NEEDS Poem Devotional
October 13

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:19(NLT)
SUPPLIER OF NEEDS
A poem and essay by ILMA
Are you desperately looking for someone to satisfy your needs?
There is not a person who can actually supply you with this
Only our heavenly Father can satisfy and give us provision
He gave us his only Son to share his riches and give us redemption
Through Christ Jesus, we can be assured of all blessings
It is through him that we can be alleviated from sufferings
God is the one who can generously supply all our needs
He is fountain of goodness and the source of all things.
________________________________________
When I got married, I had this notion at the back of my mind that my husband is going to supply all my needs. Several years later, I got more frustrated each day because he couldn’t supply and meet my needs. When I started reading and studying God’s word, I finally had to give up this worldly and romantic notion that my spouse can fill all those needs. After all, he is as broken as I am himself.
The bible tells us that God is the only one who can supply all our needs. It is unrealistic to expect from people we love what only God can supply.
PRAYER
Lord, help me to only expect from you.
REFLECTION
What happens to relationships when we have very unrealistic expectations from those we are in relationship with?
