MARK 7
14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual
immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” – Mark 7:20-23
MARK 7 WHERE EVIL COMES FROM
A poem by ILMA inspired by these verses
Nothing that comes from outside of man is wicked
It is not food that he eats nor any outward impact
But it is from inside him that makes him tempted
His desires for covetousness lead to defilement
The clamor for self-gratification is the path to sin
This leads to deceit, envy, adultery and sensuality
It is what is in his heart that is the source of evil
Unless he comes to Christ, he won’t beat the devil.
It is easy for us to point our fingers to outside forces when we are tempted to sin. The book of Mark explains to us where evil comes from. It may be difficult to understand that we are the culprit of sin, but let’s go back to the garden of Eden. Before the fall of Adam and Even, humans are sinless. They walked with God daily. There was no evil in paradise. Everything was perfect, including man’s relationship with God. When the serpent came about, everything changed. Their disobedience to God began the advent of sin. Because Adam gave away his dominion over all things to the serpent, he became sinful. Since Adam is our first parent, we inherited that sinful nature.
In this chapter, Mark narrates the time when the Pharisees questioned Jesus regarding the Jewish tradition of washing hands before eating. The Scribes and Pharisees questioned Jesus why his disciples weren’t following this custom. Jeus pointed out how they put more emphasis on following traditions rather than God’s commandments. He rebuked them in verse 6 by quoting Isaiah’s prophecy which says “‘This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
Jesus pointed out the bigger issue. It is their hearts that are the source of their uncleanliness. It is in the deepest recesses of their hearts that leads them to be tempted to disobey the law of the Lord. Following their flesh which is sinful is what truly defiles them, not any other outside forces.
REFLECTION
- If man’s heart is the source of evil, how can one react lovingly to abuse since it is outside of us?
