ARTIST STATEMENT ON PAINTINGS- I create fusions of colors and lines that dance and generate rhythm. These lines intersect gracefully to merge different hues and movements. Spontaneity in color choice is very apparent in the foliage and figure abstractions. A viewer might feel my underlying emotions if they look long enough in the painting. My collective works serve as an emotional diary. It narrates my emotions through lines, shapes, colors and tones. If you look more closely on my abstract paintings, you will gradually see the body parts and the foliage in your mind as suggested by the lines and choice of colors. ON SKETCHES-My sketches are a convergence of swirly and straight lines that build shapes, textures and tones. Having two or three different perspective in one subject conveys my childlike viewpoint of things around me. Architectural facades, street scenes, landscapes and foliage stir me most. My favourite medium is technical pen (.5 and .7)or “techpen” for short. The smooth rubbing of the sides of my hands with the paper as I turn and move the techpen to compose my subjects, inspires me to create. If you look closely at my works, the textured parts would show you a group of number 8 intertwined together. I use this technique called “swirly eights” to build up textures for foliage. I like to contrast this swirls with straight or diagonal lines and create harmony and balance in my drawings. ON PHOTOGRAPHS-”Capturing the moment” is what drives me to take pictures. Subjects in motion and the play of natural light on an object pose challenges to me as a photographer. Like my drawings, I see varying perspectives to a subject which leads me to find many different unlikely viewpoints. Experimenting with different angles is an exercise I enjoy doing as a photographer. Asymmetry attracts me more than symmetry. The not so balanced compositions make my works different and interesting if not dramatic. I like to snap shots of subjects while I am moving. It gives me a rush when I can capture and beat the movement that goes along with it with steady and anchored hands. Nothing beats the human tripod. The challenge to wait for the light to cast the perfect effect on my subjects or to find unusual angles that is out of the ordinary is the essence of my photography. It drives me to narrate the story of my subject in a captured moment. |
